Our dye workshop group.
Three members of the Amarillo guild joined us.
Here we are, gathered around the dye pots in Mary's back yard.
Helen and Becky show us two of the dyes we tried: acorns and juniper. We also used henna, madder root, Brazil wood sawdust, cochineal, Annatto Achiote Molido, yellow onion skins, turmeric,
Kool Aid, and yarrow.
First we had to wind some of the wool yarn into a skein.
Donna got the fires going for us.
First we soaked the wool yarn in cool water, then in hot water with alum to prepare it to take up the dye.
Cooper took over as the soaking attendant.
She was in the middle of everything.
Some of our dye pots.
It has hard to resist stirring and poking the dye pots!

The Brazil wood sawdust dye pot.
At first it gave deep reds, then later soft corals.

This is the madder root. It gave coppery colors.
Yellow onion skins. This gave a beautiful lemon yellow.

The cochineal gave a pinkish purple. (The orange thing is a plastic tag Donna used to identify her yarn.)

After dyeing, we rinsed the cooled yarn, then hung it on a clothesline.
This yarn was dyed in yellow onion skins,
boosted with turmeric.
We got so many hues,
depending on the yarn and the strength of the dye.
The brown yarn started out as natural grey wool.
The madder root turned it a soft brown.
Everyone took home some beautiful yarn.
It was a very successful workshop!
